DougCo Drop – Jan 29: Alpacas, A Fire, and 60 New Friends

Had a great time at the Stock Show last week, even though the rodeo did start off a little shaky thanks to Zorro’s lackluster performance. Plus, I was running behind so there was no time to swing by Wide Open Saloon’s residency for a drink and some Riot BBQ, but I did manage to catch the alpacas, horses, and mules before heading into the main event. The new Legacy Building was beautiful, and you won’t be surprised to see the Anschutz name on the Livestock Center next to it…what don’t they donate to? Note to self for next year, eat something before getting there. I ended the night with a $17 brisket sandwich about the size of my pinky, and no, it wasn’t Riot.

Heads up: Unfortunately, Jack’s Lone Tree, which we featured in last week’s edition, had a fire last Thursday. Thankfully no one was injured, but they’re expected to be closed for about a month. Hopefully they can remediate the damage quickly and reopen without any additional issues. I will keep you posted on when they open back up, especially since a lot of you said you were interested in going based on last week’s poll results. More on it from Denver7 here.

Oh, and we had our Dinner Club last night down in Castle Rock. We had almost 70 attendees and about 40 joined for the after-dinner drinks at the bar. The feedback was very positive, and I enjoyed getting to meet a bunch of you and look forward to the next one we’re doing. I’m thinking Parker later in February. A Parker bakery just made the 2026 James Beard semifinalist list
TLDR: Poulette Bakeshop in Parker was named a 2026 James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Bakery. Final nominees drop March 31, and winners are announced June 15, 2026. Castle Rock is expanding Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space
TLDR: Castle Rock Town Council approved pursuing a $1.1 million purchase of about 35 acres next to Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space. The town expects public access later this year as trails are built, and the property remains closed during planning.

2026 Douglas County Fair and Rodeo tickets are on sale
TLDR: Dates are set for July 24 through August 2, 2026, and opening night is a Trace Adkins concert on Friday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. General admission starts at $65, and ProRodeo weekend tickets are also available now.
