Drips from the Drop: Fresh Catches and Familiar Fights

Saw Living the Dream’s Sterling Ranch location is open again after a nice western remodel. Will have to check it out at some point, though I can’t say I frequent Sterling Ranch establishments/didn’t really know they existed though I can’t say I frequent Sterling Ranch establishments or even knew they existed…guess I should change that. Let me know if you’ve got something out there that I should check out.

Land and Lore

Hillcamp, Lone Tree (Update)

Back in our September 3rd issue, we covered the proposed 343-home “Hillcamp” development on 392 acres of mesa-top land west of I-25 in Lone Tree. The project has since become one of the most talked-about developments in the area, drawing pushback from neighbors who say it would alter the city’s defining bluffs.

Residents have organized under the “Save the Lone Tree Bluffs” campaign, created a website and flyers, and collected nearly 5,000 signatures opposing the plan. They’re concerned about impacts to wildlife, water, and the scenic ridgelines that frame the East-West Trail.

Brookfield Residential, the developer behind Hillcamp, says the project follows zoning approved in 2000 and would preserve the bluff face, 170 acres of open space, and trail access. The next step will be public referral and public hearings, which are not yet scheduled. The city says it cannot comment on a quasi-judicial process like this.

Tried & True

🦪 Tried & True: Blue Island Oyster Bar & Seafood — Lone Tree

There’s always a part of me that hesitates when ordering seafood in Colorado. Old habits die hard when you didn’t grow up landlocked. But that hesitation disappears at Blue Island Oyster Bar & Seafood in Lone Tree (there’s also a Cherry Creek location), since they fly in their seafood daily, including oysters straight from their own Blue Island Shellfish Farm in Long Island, NY.

I started with half a dozen oysters and was smiling the whole time, especially after hitting them with their house-made hot sauce for a little kick. Next up was their clam chowder, which they proudly call the best in Denver. I haven’t tried every chowder in the city, but it’s hard to argue with theirs. The sea clam fritter on top was a perfect touch.

Then came the prosciutto-wrapped scallops, and oh my goodness, definitely a standout dish. It came with creamed spinach and carrots, and if you go, at least one person in your party needs to order it. I also snagged a few bites of the miso Chilean sea bass, served over pan-fried noodles, veggies, and shiitake mushrooms. Incredible flavor and sauce.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it only felt right to start training early. To get in shape for the big day, we’re upping our caloric intake now, so we finished with dessert. The key lime pie had an unreal graham cracker crust, and the blood orange olive oil cake was the perfect finish. Photos of both are below.
